Client

Manx Utilities

Main Contractor

blu-3 (UK)

Scope:

17 locations surveyed covering the pinch points of the full 29km route.

Project Information:

The Isle of Man welcomes the inauguration of its new wind farm, a groundbreaking venture amplifying its commitment to sustainable energy. This state-of-the-art facility harnesses the islandā€™s gusty coastal winds, contributing significantly to its renewable energy portfolio and reducing carbon footprint. Blu-3 were employed to investigate the feasibility and logistics for the delivery of key items for the proposed development. This includes the wind supporting structures, turbine and, of course, the huge turbine blades. The innovative solution proposed by blu-3 was to use a specialist drone to survey and produce an accurate topographic plot of the entire route. The survey was completed over a blustery autumn period, but the accuracy was still well within 100mm specification. Additionally, the surveying took place near to the main airport where flying windows were often less than 15 minutes between commercial flights.

Scope:

  • Drone topographical survey

  • Mapping of underground utilities, including sewer lines, water pipes, and electrical cables.

  • Documentation of manholes, utility boxes, and stormwater drains.
